Nyendo-Mukungwe Member of Parliament, also National Unity Platform Deputy President, Mathias Mpuuga has vowed to remain in the opposition party despite pressure from top party officials and a section of the public.
While addressing journalists at Parliament, Mpuuga maintained that he’s a party founder and the thought of leaving NUP has never crossed his mind.
“Questions and speculations have been on for as to whether, where and when I am going. I am here to state that I am a founder of National Unity Platform as you are aware, I didn’t join NUP but I was part of the founding blocks of NUP where I serve as a Deputy President in charge of Buganda. I am also here to reaffirm that I am not leaving NUP, a Party I founded with colleagues consciously and I am not here to do anything to destroy or kill it,” he said.
“At least, I am not invited to do so at this moment, at least, nobody has moved me to the level of even thinking about deserting a Party I founded,” he said.
Mpuuga has faced stern criticism for allocating himself Shs500m in a meeting reportedly chaired by Speaker Rt Hon Anita Among where 1.7bn was reportedly shared by three other parliamentary commissioners in 2022.
NUP has since decided to recall Mpuuga as parliamentary commissioner over his participation in the scandal that recently became public.
*Fights within the party*
Mpuuga accused his party president Robert Kyagulanyi of blackmail arguing that the public have since rejected the attempts to maim his image.
“I have not had a meeting with my party leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka [Bobi Wine]. I have only been hearing him speak at funerals, conferences, the media, among others trying to convince the country to believe that I’m a terrible human being but the country has refused to believe that”, he said.
He stressed that the party and opposition have cast doubt within the Ugandan populace and partners abroad whether the party is capable of handling tasks of liberation and social challenges.
“We must find mechanisms for mature resolution which is different from grandstanding and desire to set political scores at the expense of reputations of comrades with whom we struggle to offer the country better leadership,” he said.
He further urged the opposition to wake up as the incumbent is fast consolidating ground ahead of the 2026 General Elections.
