Museveni shakes UPDF top brass again

President Yoweri Museveni has promoted Maj Gen Sam Kavuma to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him as the new Force Commander of African Union Transition Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Kavuma, who is also the UPDF Wazalendo Sacco boss replaces Lt Gen Samuel Okiding, who was recently appointed as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces.

The development has been confirmed in a statement by the Defence and Military spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye.

“The President and Commander in Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces has appointed and promoted Major General Sam Kavuma to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him the new Force Commander of African Union Transition Union Mission in Somalia,” Kulayigye said..

“The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and UPDF fraternity congratulate the General officer upon a well-deserved promotion and appointment,” he added. 

The development follows the recent appointment of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as Chief of Defense Forces replacing Gen Mbadi Wilson who was appointed as Minister of State for Trade and Cooperatives. 

Mbadi was successfully vetted by Parliament, March 25 and is expected to hand over to Muhoozi tomorrow in Gulu. 

The handover will be overseen by Gen Salim Saleh.
