South Africa president Cyril Ramaphosa held the seventh annual auction of cattle at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo over the weekend raking in over Shs3bn (about R15m).

The Ankole cattle were one of the most sought-after breeds of cows at the auction with top prices for Ankole bulls going for over R280,000 (about Shs58m) while pregnant Ankole cows went for R1m (about Shs200m).

According to BusinessLive, the demand for Ankole cattle in South Africa is driven by its strong genetics and great breeding quality.

“The quality of females on offer at the auction was superior; the bulls on auction were young and still developing. Top bulls will come in the future,” he said.

JP Smith, the COO of auction business Veilingswinkel, which includes host of the Ntaba Nyoni auction Veewinkel, said it was not unusual for female animals to fetch higher prices than bulls.

President Museveni recently revealed that he sold 43 Ankole cows to Ramaphosa before they became a very popular breed in South Africa.

“The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, auctioned one of the 43 Ankole cattle he bought from me and he got Shs337million from just one bull. The value of the Ankole long-horned cattle is going up,” President Museveni stated while hosting CAF president Patrice Motsepe, also one of the richest men in South Africa.

Museveni is famed for tending after his cows at his Kisozi farm.
