Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Anita Among has dismissed allegations of assassination plans against Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi.

Among dismissed the claim April 17 while chairing the plenary arguing that opposition were “playing to the gallery.”

“Who can assassinate a person? For what? Of what value are you? She pondered before adding.

“Anyway, if that (assassination allegation) was taken in the bar, maybe some people had taken something. For me those are the things that shouldn’t even come before because we don’t assassinate people. Nobody is of value that we want to assassinate people and stop playing to the gallery.”

Among made the remarks in response to Iganga Municipality legislator Peter Mugema who before the house raided a concern on reports about assassination attempts against Ssenyonyi.

“I heard my Leader of the Opposition yesterday on TV saying that they want to assassinate him and am not comfortable with it,” he said.

Among advised him to report the allegations to police: “I’m seeing a lot of things, if there is any assassination attempt, you can go and report to Police.”

Ssenyonyi recently took over the docket of Leader of Opposition after National Unity Platform bigwigs fell out with Mathias Mpuuga who shared a close working relationship with the speaker.

Assassination allegations are not new to Parliament. In September 2022, Among told Parliament that she had received a report indicating that her vehicle was being trailed by suspected assassins, who want her dead.

Police would take up investigation into the matter.
