Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued a production warrant for Kizza Besigye after he failed to appear before it.
Besigye is accused by the state of inciting violence together with his co-accused, Lubega Mukaaku, a political activist and former presidential aspirant.
The offense allegedly took place at Kikuubo, in Kampala Central Division on June 14, 2022. The two held a rally where they allegedly incited the people into violence.
Besigye, who was scheduled to appear before the Chief Magistrate’s Court today failed to appear because he is incarcerated in Luzira Prisons.
The court martial sitting at Makindye remanded Besigye to Luzira Prisons in the case where the state alleges that he was plotting to compromise the security of the state and possession of firearms and rounds of ammunition.
Besigye and his co-accused in the military court, Obeid Lutale were kidnapped from Nairobi in late November, and arraigned before Uganda’s military court-martial after the media and activists sounded alarm over his kidnap.
On December 02, 2024, the court martial remanded Besigye and Obeid Lutale until December 10, 2024 when he will appear again.
The Buganda Road Court has instructed the prisons authorities to avail him before it on January 9, 2025.
A production warrant is a court order instructing prison authorities to produce a person in their custody before court.
When a person encourages others to commit violent acts, they are considered to have incited violence, whether the crime happened or did not happen.
