IGG Betty Kamya Has Ordered Leaders to Declare Wealth by March 2025

Ugandan leaders are once again under the microscope as Inspector General of Government (IGG) Betty Kamya today has issued a stern reminder for leaders to comply with the March 2025 wealth declaration deadline or face the consequences.

Speaking to government officials and the press, Kamya emphasized the legal obligation under the Leadership Code, which mandates public officials to declare their assets, liabilities, and income. The law aims to combat corruption and promote accountability.

“This is not optional. Leaders must declare their wealth as per the law, and failure to do so will result in serious legal consequences,” Kamya warned.

Uganda has long struggled with corruption scandals, and public trust in leadership is at an all-time low. The timing of this announcement just a year before the 2026 general elections raises suspicions.

While Kamya’s directive sounds bold, critics argue that wealth declarations in Uganda have historically been nothing more than a formality. Past attempts to enforce this requirement have been met with falsified asset declarations.

Transparency advocates are skeptical, warning that without actual enforcement, the exercise will be as hollow as previous attempts.

Kamya has made it clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated. The IGG’s office has promised to cross-check declared assets with known properties, bank accounts, and business interests.
