A diplomatic storm is brewing between Uganda and Kenya as the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) announces an “energetic demonstration” set to take place at the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala next Wednesday.
The move comes in response to an article published by Kenya’s The Standard newspaper which PLU deems an “insult” to their chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
The controversy erupted after The Standard newspaper ran a front-page story titled “Four Star Brat,” a headline that PLU members and supporters of Gen. Kainerugaba have condemned as “highly disrespectful.”
The article questioned Kainerugaba’s public conduct, his influence on Uganda’s military and his frequent controversial social media statements that have often sparked diplomatic concerns.
Daudi Kabanda the ggeneral secretary of PLU and Member of Parliament took to social media to announce the protest stating,
“They burnt our High Commission last year and we did not respond. Now one of their newspapers has insulted our PLU CHAIRMAN. We will respond with full force!”
The anger stems from what PLU calls a “pattern of hostility” from Kenya towards Uganda.
Some Ugandan nationalists recall an incident last year when the Ugandan High Commission in Nairobi was reportedly attacked by unknown individuals an incident that did not trigger an official retaliation from Uganda. However, this time PLU vows a firm response.
PLU-led protests have been characterized by large turnouts and strong rhetoric. The group which positions itself as a nationalist movement advocating for Uganda’s sovereignty and military strength has been vocal in defending Gen. Kainerugaba against both domestic and foreign criticism.
Kenyan High Commission has not yet issued a statement regarding the planned protest and it remains uncertain whether diplomatic discussions will be held to de-escalate tensions before the demonstration takes place.
However, analysts warn that such actions could strain Uganda-Kenya relations which have already faced moments of friction in the past.
The Ugandan government has also remained silent on the matter regarding PLU’s protest. Given Gen. Kainerugaba’s influence in the military and his ambitions for national leadership the outcome of this protest could have wider political implications beyond just media criticism.
