Uganda’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has been elected Chairman of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) a move hailed as a significant diplomatic victory for Uganda.
The announcement was made on Tuesday following his official secondment by the Parliament of Uganda. Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon.
Speaker Among praised Tayebwa’s appointment expressing gratitude to the organization and emphasizing Uganda’s growing influence in global affairs.
“We are happy he was given the opportunity to be President. I thank the organization and congratulate Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa,” said Among.
OACPS is a bloc of 79 member states from Africa, Caribbean and Pacific plays that a crucial role in global economic and trade negotiations particularly in shaping relations with the European Union.
Tayebwa’s leadership comes at a time when Uganda is seeking to strengthen its diplomatic ties to amplify its voice in international trade and policy discussions.
His election however, has sparked mixed reactions with some political analysts viewing it as a boost to Uganda’s global standing while other question the country’s commitment to democratic governance and press freedom issues that have often drawn scrutiny on the international stage.
Nevertheless, Tayebwa’s new role places him at the center of critical discussions affecting developing nations particularly in areas of climate change, trade policies and economic partnerships.
