The Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland KC has condemned the prolonged detention of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. Despite a Supreme Court ruling on January 31, 2025, ordering his release.

Besigye remains behind bars alongside Haji Obeid Lutale and Eron Kiiza raising serious concerns about Uganda’s commitment to the rule of law.

Commonwealth expressed its disagreement over the government’s disregard for judicial independence and its potential violation of human rights.

Adding fuel to the situation, Besigye’s deteriorating health has sparked fresh calls for urgent medical intervention with international bodies warning that Uganda’s democracy is at stake.

The story surrounding Besigye’s detention is not new but this time, it has triggered an international diplomatic storm.

Commonwealth’s statement not only questioned the legality of his continued imprisonment but also accused Ugandan government of undermining its own justice system.

Even more concerning is the claim that Besigye was abducted in Nairobi, Kenya on November 16, 2024 an act that blatantly disregarded the Ugandan Supreme Court’s authority.

Beyond political and legal implications, Besigye’s health has become a pressing humanitarian concern.

Reports indicate that his condition has worsened while in Luzira Prison fueling outrage from activists and international leaders.

Commonwealth has urged President Museveni’s administration to ensure Besigye receives immediate medical care with calls for his unconditional release growing louder.

While Ugandan authorities insist that Besigye is being treated fairly, his supporters argue that his detention serves only one purpose to eliminate political opposition by any means necessary.
