Uganda Airlines has officially announced the launch of direct flights from Entebbe to London Gatwick starting May 18, 2025.
This much anticipated route, operating four times a week marks a historic milestone in the airline’s expansion and signals Uganda’s growing presence on the global aviation map.
The announcement was made by Uganda Airlines CEO, Ms. Bamuturaki Jenifer, who described the new route as a game-changer for business, tourism and trade between Uganda and UK.
Speaking at the launch event, she emphasized that this move ends the airline’s establishment phase and sets it on a path for long-term growth and sustainability.
“London route follows meticulous planning and preparations… Finally, we are ready to get you to your destination in time.” “It gives me great pleasure that we celebrate our 5th year with this amazing milestone.” Bamuturaki said.
“I’m elated and excited to announce the dates for the long awaited direct flights to London by Uganda Airlines.” “This route marks the end of our establishment phase and sets us on a course for long term growth and expansion,” she added.
The launch of direct Entebbe-London flights is a significant development for Uganda’s aviation sector, offering travelers a seamless nine-hour journey without the inconvenience of stopovers in Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha, or Dubai.
For years, Ugandans flying to UK had to endure long layovers, increased travel costs and extended flight durations. This new route changes the game entirely.
United Kingdom remains one of Uganda’s top trade and diplomatic partners with strong economic, cultural and familial ties.
The large Ugandan diaspora in UK, particularly in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester has long pushed for a direct connection. Additionally, Ugandan businesses, students and tourists will now have easier access to UK’s vast opportunities.
With this being Uganda Airlines’ first European destination, the airline now faces stiff competition from Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and RwandAir which have long dominated the East Africa-UK travel corridor.
However, Uganda Airlines is banking on its direct flight advantage and superior onboard experience to capture the market.
Operating the route with its state-of-the-art Airbus A330-800neo fleet, Uganda Airlines promises passengers a luxurious yet affordable experience.
While the excitement is high, Uganda Airlines must now prove its ability to run the route efficiently, maintain reliability and overcome financial sustainability challenges.
Uganda Airlines has faced criticism in the past over management issues and financial losses. The success of the London route will depend on its ability to offer top-tier service, maintain punctuality and operate profitably.
The launch of direct flights to London is not just about convenience, it’s national pride, economic growth and Uganda’s place in global aviation as the first flight takes off on May 18, 2025.
