Members of Parliament (MPs) called for the allocation of Shs2.9 billion to Vision Group, the parent company of New Vision to revive Uganda’s vernacular newspapers Orumuri (Runyankore-Rukiga), Etop (Ateso) and Rupiny (Luo).

The call was made during a heated Plenary session at Parliament in Kampala citing the urgent need to preserve indigenous languages and revive local readership across rural Uganda.

The MPs’ demand is aimed at resurrecting the once thriving vernacular publications that were previously discontinued due to financial constraints and declining print revenues.

The proposed funds would be channeled through the Vision Group, a government-owned media powerhouse to save these linguistic heritage newspapers that served as critical information lifelines in Uganda’s diverse regions.

Legislators argued passionately that these publications play an irreplaceable role in civic education, agricultural extension and local governance awareness especially in rural communities where English-based media remains out of reach for many.

“Language is not just a tool, it’s our identity. When you kill a language, you erase a people’s voice.”

While the move has garnered support from cultural leaders and language preservationists, critics question the timing and prioritization of such spending in the face of budgetary pressures affecting healthcare, education and youth employment.

“How do we explain Shs2.9 billion for newspapers when hospitals are short on beds?” one social media user posted, reflecting a wave of skepticism online.

Although Vision Group has yet to release an official statement, internal sources hint at preparedness to digitally integrate the publications and expand distribution through radio and online platforms if the funds are approved. This could mean a modern revival not just in print but across multiple media formats.

The proposal is expected to be scrutinized further by the budget committee with final recommendations to be made in the coming weeks.

As the debate unfolds, one thing is certain Orumuri, Etop, and Rupiny may soon have another chance to speak to the hearts of Ugandans in the voices they understand best.
