Moses Nsereko’s Political U-turn From Presidential Bid to Councilor Forms

Kampala, Uganda – Moses Nsereko, the former Kawempe North MP aspirant who recently declared his intention to run for President under the National Unity Platform (NUP), was spotted today picking up nomination forms not for the presidency, but for a local councilor seat.

Nsereko, who made headlines earlier this month with bold presidential ambitions, was seen at the NUP headquarters in Kavule quietly collecting nomination documents for a Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) councilor position.

Just weeks ago, Nsereko addressed a crowd in Kawempe, boldly declaring his intention to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 general elections under the NUP ticket.

His speech was filled with fiery rhetoric, promises of generational change, and fierce criticism of the status quo.

However, his quiet move to collect councilor nomination forms has now cast serious doubt on the sincerity, if not the feasibility, of that presidential ambition.

“This move may signal either a calculated strategy to remain relevant within NUP’s grassroots structures or a recognition of the discouraging realities of a presidential race,” Henry Mukiibi said.

So far, the NUP leadership has not issued an official statement regarding Nsereko’s nomination switch. However, sources within the party hint at internal vetting processes that may have influenced his pivot.

“It’s one thing to declare interest, but another to pass the party’s presidential vetting bar. Many aspirants are redirected to positions where they can realistically contribute.”

Nsereko previously contested for Kawempe North Member of Parliament but lost to NUP’s Elias Nalukoola in a hotly contested race. His latest shift may be a sign of recalibrated ambitions, choosing to work within the city council instead of gunning for State House, at least for now.

The public reaction has been anything but muted. Some have hailed his decision as mature and realistic, seeing it as a step towards building local support before eyeing national office in future elections.

With nomination forms now in hand, Nsereko is expected to submit them to the NUP electoral committee within the week. If approved, he will officially join the race for a seat on the Kampala Capital City Authority council, a far cry from the national stage he once eyed.
