Kampala, Uganda – National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has issued a stark warning to Uganda’s legal fraternity, cautioning that lawyers are no longer immune to the rising tide of lawlessness in the country.
Speaking during the Uganda Law Society’s Radical New Bar weekly discourse held at the society’s headquarters in Kampala today, Bobi Wine said the growing insecurity has created a dangerous climate where even professionals such as lawyers face similar risks as youths in the country’s ghettos.
“I want to remind all lawyers that you are not safer than the youths in the ghettos,” Bobi Wine said, drawing parallels between targeted arrests and harassment faced by opposition supporters and what he described as the shrinking space for legal practitioners.
The NUP leader’s comments come amid increasing reports of alleged political persecution, arbitrary arrests, and court interference, particularly affecting opposition politicians, supporters, and now lawyers engaged in politically sensitive cases.
“We are living in a lawless society where justice is under siege. Today it’s the ghetto youth, tomorrow it’s the lawyer defending them,” he warned.
Bobi Wine, a former presidential candidate, has been vocal about the role of the legal profession in resisting what he terms as state-sponsored oppression.
He encouraged lawyers to remain steadfast in defending constitutional rights and upholding the rule of law, regardless of the risks involved.
The Uganda Law Society’s Radical New Bar is a weekly platform that brings together legal practitioners to engage in critical discussions on human rights, governance, and the independence of the judiciary.
