EC Warns NRM Primaries May Ignite Chaos During 2026 Elections

Kampala, Uganda – Electoral Commission has sounded a red alert following widespread violence during the ruling NRM party’s internal primaries held on July 17.

The Commission now warns that if left unaddressed, the unrest witnessed could severely undermine the credibility and safety of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking to the media, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi acknowledged the impressive voter turnout during the primaries but condemned the chaos that unfolded.

“The violence, destruction of property, and reports of fatalities are deeply concerning,” he said.

EC urged all political organizations yet to conduct their internal polls to draw critical lessons from the NRM experience. Among the Commission’s recommendations were stronger internal coordination, enforcement of discipline and full compliance with national electoral laws.

“These elections are not just about choosing party candidates, they must reflect the values of democracy and peace,” Mucunguzi added.

NRM’s primaries turned violent in several districts, including Ssembabule, Budaka, Mbale, Isingiro, Kamuli, and Lwemiyaga. Reports emerged of armed gangs storming polling stations, physical assaults on candidates and voters, and suspected involvement of hired militias.

Several people were injured, and local authorities are still investigating deaths linked to the unrest.

Democratic Front, one of Uganda’s emerging opposition movements, has criticized the primaries, calling them a national security concern.

“This is more than just a party affair. If internal party elections are this chaotic, what will the national vote look like?” a party statement read.

Political analysts have echoed this concern, warning that the NRM party’s failure to contain internal aggression sets a dangerous tone for Uganda’s electoral climate in 2026.

NRM’s Electoral Commission chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi promised tough action, noting that several districts had their primary results nullified due to ballot stuffing, tampering, and violent disruptions.

“Anyone found abusing the process, be it through incitement or fraud will be dealt with both internally and through the law,” he stated.

The national EC has now called on all political actors to ensure upcoming elections whether internal or national are conducted peacefully, with enhanced logistical preparedness and zero tolerance for electoral violence.
