Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni will officially kick off the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 this Friday, July 25 at 12:00 PM, during a grand ceremony at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The tournament’s unique feature is its triple-host format, co-hosted for the first time by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania
CHAN is a showcase of Africa’s homegrown talent, featuring only players active in their domestic leagues. It’s seen as a preparatory test for the upcoming AFCON 2027, also to be hosted by the East African countries.
For Uganda, the event is a moment of national pride, with upgraded infrastructure and heightened sports tourism expectations.
The tournament will run from 2–30 August 2025, with matches played across Dar es Salaam (opening match, Benjamin Mkapa Stadium), Nairobi (final, Kasarani & Nyayo Stadiums) and Kampala (Uganda hosting Group C matches and the third-place playoff at Mandela Stadium)
Uganda’s CHAN fixtures begin on 4 August, starting with a high-profile clash against Algeria at Mandela Stadium
State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang described the event as a milestone in Uganda’s sports tourism journey and a critical rehearsal for AFCON 2027.
Alongside him, First Lady Janet Museveni, who chairs the tournament’s Local Organising Committee, will take part in the official launch.
