Capt. Mike Mukula Withdraws from NRM Eastern CEC Race

Kololo, Kampala – Capt. Mike Mukula, the long-serving Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda in the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has withdrawn from the race for the same Central Executive Committee (CEC) position.

He instead endorsed youthful contender Calvin Echodu, citing concerns about fairness in the internal election process.

Mukula, who has held the influential regional seat since 2010, made the announcement at the NRM National Delegates Conference at Kololo Independence Grounds.

He sharply criticised what he described as the commercialisation of party politics, warning that money had taken precedence over democratic principles.

“I cannot in good conscience continue in this race when the very principles of transparency and fairness that our party stands for are being undermined,” Mukula told delegates.

“We must not mortgage the future of our party to those with the deepest pockets.”

He described Echodu as a representative of the new generation of leaders, capable of uniting the Eastern region while upholding NRM values through integrity and grassroots respect.

Analysts note that Mukula’s withdrawal signals growing dissatisfaction among senior NRM members with internal election practices. His decision is expected to significantly bolster Echodu’s bid, shifting the dynamics of a contest already under intense scrutiny.

The Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda is one of six regional positions on the NRM’s CEC, the party’s highest decision-making organ. Holders of these posts play a key role in shaping strategy, consolidating support, and guiding preparations for the 2026 general elections.
