NUP Launches 2026 Presidential Bid with 126,000 Signatures.

Kampala, Uganda – National Unity Platform (NUP) has submitted presidential nomination forms to the Electoral Commission, confirming Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, as their flagbearer in the 2026 General Election.

The opposition party announced it had collected 126,000 endorsement signatures from 126 districts, more than ten times the constitutional requirement.

The legal threshold demands 10,000 signatures, 100 from each of at least 98 districts, but NUP says it went further to demonstrate nationwide support.

“We are ready to liberate Uganda. The people have spoken, change is coming,” declared NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya as he led jubilant delegates to the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala.

Supporters waved flags, sang revolutionary songs, and chanted “People Power!” reviving the spirit that shook the political establishment during the 2021 election.

In August 2025, NUP launched a nationwide signature drive, mobilizing volunteers across villages and towns. The campaign captured endorsements even in long-time NRM strongholds like Mbarara and Bushenyi, and on 9th September 2025, Rubongoya and senior party officials delivered boxes of forms to the Electoral Commission offices.

On September 23–24, 2025, Electoral Commission will officially nominate presidential candidates, with Bobi Wine expected to be among the first.

NUP’s submission has stirred political debate not just because of the quantity of signatures but also their spread and demographics. The 126,000 signatures represent a 1,160% above the legal minimum; more than 70% of those who signed were under the age of 35. Uganda’s youthful majority continues to be Bobi Wine’s strongest base.

“This isn’t just about numbers, it’s about energy,” Rubongoya told reporters. “Ugandans are tired of empty promises. They want real change.”

With nominations around the corner, Uganda is bracing for an electrifying contest that could redefine its political future. Bobi Wine’s 126,000-signature milestone is more than a procedural step; it is a powerful statement of intent.

The 2026 elections are no longer a distant prospect. They are here, and the battle lines have been drawn: Museveni’s 40-year rule versus Bobi Wine’s promise of generational change.
