Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Anita Among has congratulated the newly elected leadership of the 12th Parliament, expressing confidence in their ability to guide the country’s legislative agenda and serve the national interest.

In a message shared shortly after the elections, Among extended her congratulations to Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, who were elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively during the inaugural sitting of the 12th Parliament held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

“I join my colleagues in congratulating Rt Hon Oboth Oboth and Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa on their election as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament,” Among said in a public statement.

She added that she has no doubt that their leadership would strengthen Parliament’s legislative work and promote outcomes that advance Uganda’s national interests.

Oboth-Oboth, the Member of Parliament for West Budama Central, was elected Speaker after securing 441 votes during the first sitting of the new Parliament. His victory marked the beginning of a new chapter in Uganda’s legislature following the conclusion of the 11th Parliament.

Meanwhile, Tayebwa, the Ruhinda North legislator, retained the position of Deputy Speaker after winning a decisive victory with 457 votes. He had previously served in the same role in the 11th Parliament after being elected in 2022.

The elections completed the formation of Parliament’s top leadership team for the 2026–2031 legislative term and reinforced the ruling National Resistance Movement’s influence in the House.

Anita Among, who served as Speaker of the 11th Parliament from March 2022 until the end of the previous parliamentary term, used her message to wish the new leaders success as they assume their responsibilities.

Her statement was among several congratulatory messages issued by political leaders following the elections, which attracted national attention as Uganda’s newly elected legislators convened for the first time to choose the officials who will preside over parliamentary business for the next five years.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker occupy two of the most important constitutional offices in Uganda’s governance structure. The Speaker presides over parliamentary sittings, safeguards the rules of procedure, and represents Parliament in its relations with other arms of government. The Deputy Speaker assists in those duties and chairs proceedings in the Speaker’s absence.

With the leadership elections concluded, attention is now expected to shift to the formation of parliamentary committees and the commencement of legislative business under the stewardship of Oboth-Oboth and Tayebwa.

As the 12th Parliament begins its work, the message from Among reflects a call for continuity, cooperation, and effective leadership in advancing the country’s legislative priorities.
