KAMPALA, Uganda
Hon. Thomas Tayebwa has been re-elected Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament after securing an overwhelming majority of votes during elections held at the first sitting of the newly constituted House on Monday.
According to official results announced by Parliament, Tayebwa garnered 457 votes, comfortably defeating his challengers, Hon. Sarah Aguti and Hon. Asinansi Nyakato, who received 14 and 45 votes respectively.
The election was conducted as part of the opening business of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, following the swearing-in of Members of Parliament elected during the 2026 General Election.
The Deputy Speaker is elected by MPs and serves as the second-highest-ranking presiding officer in Parliament after the Speaker. The officeholder chairs parliamentary sittings in the Speaker’s absence and plays a key role in overseeing legislative business.
Tayebwa, the Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North, entered the race as one of the most recognizable figures in Parliament, having served as Deputy Speaker since March 2022. Before assuming the role, he served as Government Chief Whip and built a reputation as a key figure within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
His decisive victory reflects strong support among legislators at the start of the new parliamentary term. The election follows months of political discussions surrounding the leadership of the 12th Parliament, with several candidates expressing interest in both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions.
Hon. Sarah Aguti and Hon. Asinansi Nyakato, who also contested for the position, campaigned on their respective visions for parliamentary leadership. Nyakato, a legislator from Hoima and a prominent opposition figure, has previously served in Parliament and has been active on issues related to governance, accountability, and community development.
The Deputy Speaker election took place shortly after Parliament elected its Speaker, marking the formal establishment of the leadership team that will guide the House over the next five years. The 12th Parliament is expected to oversee legislation, government accountability, budget scrutiny, and representation of citizens’ interests during its term.
Speaking through the outcome of the vote, legislators handed Tayebwa a renewed mandate to continue in the office he has occupied since 2022. His re-election ensures continuity in parliamentary leadership as Uganda embarks on a new legislative term.
With the leadership elections now concluded, attention is expected to shift to the formation of parliamentary committees and the commencement of legislative business in the weeks ahead.
