KAMPALA, Uganda
Suspected killers of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo have been brought before the KCCA City Hall Magistrates Court to answer charges connected to his murder.
The suspects appeared in court following investigations into the fatal attack that claimed the life of the 27-year-old sportsman in Kampala.
According to our reporter, suspects including a one Obed Mugwiisa and others were produced in court under tight security as proceedings got underway to formally read charges related to the killing.
The court appearance follows earlier reports that Gongodyo was attacked by a mob in the Kampala suburb of Bukoto on June 5, 2026, an incident that shocked the country’s sports community.
Police have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing, including the identities of those involved and the events that led to the fatal assault.
The death of Gongodyo, a national rugby player, sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate about mob justice in urban areas.
Sports stakeholders, fans, and members of the public have called for swift prosecution of those responsible and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The suspects are expected to respond to the charges as the case proceeds through the magistrate’s court system.
