KAMPALA, Uganda
People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was reportedly taken into custody by security operatives from his residence in Wakaliga, in an incident that has sparked concern among opposition supporters and members of the legal fraternity.
Reports indicate that armed operatives believed to be attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC) arrived at Lukwago’s home and carried out the operation under circumstances that remain unclear.
According to eyewitness accounts, the operatives reportedly scaled the perimeter wall of Lukwago’s residence before taking him away.
Videos and images circulating online showed heightened security activity around the property, although authorities had not issued an official statement by the time of publication.
The exact reason for the operation, where Lukwago was taken, and whether he has been formally arrested remain unknown.
The incident comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale.
Lukwago, one of Besigye’s lead lawyers, has been actively involved in challenging the treason and misprision of treason charges facing the two men.
The development also follows a recent High Court directive requiring Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba to file a defence in a case arising from alleged social media threats directed at Besigye.
The reported detention quickly drew reactions from opposition supporters and civil society activists, many of whom questioned the circumstances under which the senior lawyer and political leader was taken away.
Several opposition figures called for authorities to disclose Lukwago’s whereabouts and clarify the legal basis for the operation.
The police spokespersons ACP Kituuma Rusoke reportedly stated they were not aware of any formal arrest.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba‘s social media posts suggesting he had been taken into custody.
“I have captured a FOOL and taken him to the basement… We are still warming up the fool. Pictures soon.”
