KAMPALA, Uganda
Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) chairman and Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced changes to the leadership of the political pressure group, appointing Hon. Fadil Twaha as the new Secretary General.
The announcement was made through a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), where Muhoozi outlined plans to reorganize the PLU leadership structure as the organization prepares for what he described as new challenges ahead.
Muhoozi said Fadil Twaha will replace Hon. David Kabanda, who has served as Secretary General for the past three years.
“The new General Secretary of PLU is Hon. Fadil Twaha. I will work closely with him to achieve our objectives. I thank Hon. Kabanda for his three years of excellent service. He set the standard high for the position,” Muhoozi wrote.
He also directed PLU National Vice Chairperson Michael Nuwagira, popularly known as Toyota, to organize a formal handover ceremony between the outgoing and incoming Secretary General.
According to Muhoozi, all PLU ministers and Members of Parliament are expected to attend the event.
PLU leader also announced that he will soon appoint a new Central Committee for the organization.
He said the current team had successfully achieved its objectives but noted that the organization now requires fresh leadership to address emerging priorities.
“In the next few months I will appoint a new membership of the Central Committee of PLU. We achieved what we set out for with the previous team. The new challenges that face us need a fresh team,” he stated.
However, Muhoozi confirmed that four members will retain their positions on the committee. These are:
- Michael Nuwagira
- Edwin Karugire
- Hon. Michael Mawanda
- Andrew Mwenda
- Muhoozi also reiterated PLU’s strategic cooperation with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), saying the partnership is aimed at delivering results for Ugandans.
He called on PLU members serving in Cabinet and Parliament to return to their constituencies and closely monitor government programmes.
“PLU’s strategic alliance with NRM is based on achieving results for our people. Our members in Cabinet and Parliament must follow the President’s instructions to return to the grassroots and effectively monitor government programmes,” he said.
The Patriotic League of Uganda was launched in 2024 and has since grown into one of the country’s most visible political mobilization groups. Although it is not a registered political party, PLU has attracted support from politicians, business leaders, youth groups, and government officials.
