KAMPALA, Uganda

Vice President Jessica Alupo has sought to calm concerns surrounding the whereabouts of Amuria District Woman MP Margaret Etilu, saying the legislator is expected to resume her parliamentary duties this week.

Speaking on the floor of parlament, Alupo said she had met some of Etilu’s family members and received assurances that the MP would soon return to Parliament.

“She is expected to join Parliament this week,” Alupo said, according to the report.

Questions about Etilu’s whereabouts emerged after reports indicated that she had not been seen publicly since late May.

The report claims that Etilu was last seen after leaving the Kampala residence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among. Since then, there has been no public appearance or official communication from the legislator, prompting questions from colleagues, family members, and constituents

Her absence sparked concern among constituents, family members, and some lawmakers, leading to calls for clarification about her status.

The matter also generated debate on social media, with some commentators questioning whether the legislator had been detained or was facing other undisclosed challenges.

However, no official agency publicly confirmed any arrest or detention.

Alupo’s remarks are the first high-level indication that the MP is safe and expected to resume her duties.

According to the Vice President, discussions with Etilu’s relatives provided reassurance that the legislator would soon be back in Parliament.

The statement is likely to ease concerns that had been growing both in Parliament and in Amuria District, where residents had been seeking information about their representative.

During the same remarks, Alupo also addressed concerns relating to John Bosco Kibalama, although details of her comments were not immediately available.

Kibalama, a political figure known for his role in Uganda’s opposition politics, has recently been the subject of public discussion following reports regarding his welfare and circumstances.

Etilu’s anticipated return comes as the 12th Parliament continues to organize its work and committees following the formation of the new government.

Her reappearance in the House would likely bring an end to days of speculation surrounding her absence and provide an opportunity for further clarification on the circumstances that led to public concern.
