KAMPALA, Uganda – Government of Uganda has launched a food relief programme for communities affected by food insecurity in theKaramoja sub-region, with the first consignment containing 300,000 kilograms of food supplies flagged off for distribution.
The relief effort was launched by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who represented the government during the flag-off ceremony involving officials from the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) and other government agencies.

The relief package includes 200,000 kilograms of maize flour and100,000 kilograms of beans
These supplies are expected to be distributed to affected communities across the sub-region as part of government efforts to respond to food insecurity.
The initiative is being coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister, with support from the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), which is responsible for providing the food supplies.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja met with NEC leadership, suppliers, and other government officials before the official dispatch of the relief items.
The distribution process will involve relevant government authorities and local leaders to ensure the food reaches the intended beneficiaries.
Karamoja has for years faced challenges related to food insecurity due to factors including climate conditions, poverty, and limited agricultural productivity.
Periods of drought and unpredictable weather patterns have affected food production in the region, increasing reliance on humanitarian support.
The latest intervention is aimed at providing immediate assistance to households struggling to access sufficient food.
Government said the relief supplies are part of broader efforts to support vulnerable communities and address food challenges in Karamoja.
Officials have continued to emphasise the need for long-term solutions, including improving agricultural production, supporting livelihoods, and strengthening food security systems.
Food is expected to be transported to Karamoja and distributed among affected communities through local government structures.
Authorities are expected to monitor the distribution process to ensure transparency and that the supplies reach the targeted households.
