Private Ruhamya Kainerugaba, son of the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom alongside fellow Ugandan officer cadet Bakira Ruyondo.
The two completed the academy’s officer commissioning course and graduated at Sandhurst on Wednesday, 5 August.
This course is designed to prepare military cadets for commissioned officer roles with training focused on leadership, command, military skills and decision-making.
Ruhamya’s graduation marks the latest chapter in a military career that has attracted considerable attention because of his family background.
Ruhamya joined Sandhurst earlier this year with his father publicly confirming in May that he was undergoing training at the prestigious military academy.
Muhoozi who shared photographs of his son during military exercises and said he was doing an excellent job at the academy.
The senior general graduated from Sandhurst in 2000, when he was commissioned as a second lieutenant.
His son’s graduation therefore creates a notable link between two generations of the Kainerugaba family and the British military academy.
Royal Military Academy Sandhurst located in Surrey, England, is the British Army’s principal institution for training officers.
It has a history dating back more than two centuries and has trained military officers from Britain and numerous other countries.
Unlike a conventional university, Sandhurst’s principal purpose is military officer training. Its commissioning course places considerable emphasis on leadership, discipline, command, physical endurance and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
International cadets from allied and partner countries regularly train alongside British officer cadets.
Ruhamya was not the only Ugandan to complete the course. Officer Cadet Bakira Ruyondo also graduated from the academy alongside him.
Their graduation represents another example of Ugandan military personnel receiving officer training abroad as Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) continues to send personnel to foreign military institutions for specialised training.
Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara congratulated the two graduates after their completion of the course.
Ruhamya’s military training became public in May when Gen Muhoozi announced that his son had joined Sandhurst.
At the time, the UPDF chief described his son as a new soldier in the family and posted photographs of him taking part in field exercises.
The younger Kainerugaba was identified as a Private before undertaking the officer training programme.
His completion of the course is significant because Sandhurst training is intended to prepare cadets for leadership roles as commissioned officers.
