Speaker Among claims plot for her position

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among claims there’s a grand plot to oust as the head of the legislature.

While addressing NRM supporters at the party’s register update exercise in Bukedea, Among rallied her voters to stand with her amidst the heavy criticism her office is receiving due to alleged reports of corruption, mismanagement of funds, irregular recruitment, abuse of privileges, among others.

Addressing in English and partly Ateso, Among claimed that there are “people who want to reclaim their seat” in Parliament.

“There are people saying they want to reclaim their seat of a Speaker. What did they leave there? What haven’t we done?” She said before adding. “You mean we don’t need a Speaker in Teso? May be I’m a better asset than them. I want to tell them that we’re still there”.

While chairing plenary on Friday, Among accused homosexuals of fighting her through the social media campaign #UgandaParliamentExhibition.

She rejected to respond to the concerns raised by the campaign stressing that they’re merely rumours.

“I will never give you an answer on hearsay, or rumormongering. Me to answer you on hearsay? On things you have cooked up on social media because I have said no to [homosexuality],” she stated.

The matter was brought before the House by Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi who tasked Among to make clarification on the trending reports of irregular recruitment, mismanagement of funds, among others.

He was backed up by Hon. Theodore Ssekikubo who also noted that the image of the Parliament is at stake if the reports are unanswered.

Among would task the legislators to present evidence stressing that Parliament handles evidence based reports.

The alleged reports revealed documents obtained from Financial Intelligence Authority that show the Speaker spends up to Shs400m per week.

It also emerged that between February 8, 2023 and April 17, 2023, over 2bn was transferred to Daniel Adilo a staff member of Parliament, for alleged private activities of the Speaker, among other glaring anomalies.
