Sylvia Owori declares bid to unseat Sarah Opendi in Tororo

Deputy director Operation Wealth Creation Sylvia Owori has announced her interest in the Tororo District Woman Member of Parliament seat ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

Owori, arguably one of the most famous women in Uganda in the last decade, made the announcement on social media platform X, informing the current legislator Sarah Opendi of her interest.

“Sarah Opendi, I will be standing as the Woman MP of Tororo,” she announced, and confidently added:”Let the best woman win.”

Opendi is serving as the Woman MP of Tororo for her second time. On the floor of Parliament, Opendi has attracted national attention due to her unapologetic, and controversial statements. She recently proposed to introduce a bill to regulate consumption of alcohol in Uganda restricting opening of bars to 5 pm, much to the annoyance of the public.

She has also ruffled feathers with Western powers due to her stance on homosexuality in Uganda. While debating the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, Opendi proposed for the castration of homosexuals. Her comments recently earned her a visa denial to a New York conference.

On the other hand, Owori has been serving under Gen Salim Saleh, also brother to president Yoweri Museveni, since 2015 under Operation Wealth Creation program.

She would later be elevated to office of the deputy director. Saleh is said to be a powerful kingmaker without a formal political office.

Previously, Owori made her name and fame as a fashion designer and holder of the Miss Uganda beauty pageant franchise.

She holds a bachelors degree from University of Derby, UK. She also studied fashion and design at Newham College in the United Kingdom before returning to invest her knowledge and skills in the Ugandan beauty and fashion industry.
