Former Forum for Democratic Change ( FDC) press secretary and veteran political activist, Sarah Eperu is dead, former party president Dr Kizza Besigye announced Sunday evening.
“Just been given the very sad news of the passing of our veteran political activist Sarah Eperu- devastating!” Besigye announced on X.
According to FDC, Eperu was serving as the chairperson of the Kapir County Constituency branch in Ngora district, Eastern Uganda.
“Hon. Eperu served the party in various positions as the former Spokesperson of the Women’s League and, until her passing, as the Chairperson of the Kapir County Constituency Branch in Ngora District,” FDC stated in their communique Sunday evening.
Eperu was a key name in political activism as she led several demonstrations against government especially over women’s rights, security and land grabbing.
She led a vibrant team of women’s activists at Najjanakumbi leading the FDC’s Women League which included now exiled author and former Makerere University don Stella Nyanzi.
Among the popular activism works, Eperu fearlessly led demonstrations against the serial murders of 19 young men in both Entebbe and Nansana areas between June and September 2017.
The gruesome killings included attacking young women in the middle of the night, sexually assaulting them to death before inserting sticks in their private parts. The FDC Women’s League led the way in demanding for quick investigation and security report over the murders.
As activism waned in Najjanakumbi with subsequent changes of leadership at FDC, Eperu moved from street style activism to the boardroom as she served as the party’s press secretary before returning to the grassroots in Ngora district, Eastern Uganda, where she was serving in the party’s constituency branch.
