Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has met the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Uganda, Dr Kasonde G. Mwinga to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two institutions.
Baryomunsi said the discussions, held at his office on Friday focused on the partnership between the Ministry of Health and WHO particularly efforts to strengthen the country’s health systems.
The minister thanked WHO for its continued support saying the organisation has played an important role in strengthening healthcare services in Uganda.
The meeting comes as Uganda seeks to improve access to quality healthcare, strengthen primary healthcare and enhance preparedness for disease outbreaks.
Uganda has worked closely with WHO on disease surveillance and emergency response, including during recent Ebola outbreaks and other public health emergencies.
Government is also expanding community-based healthcare initiatives aimed at bringing essential services closer to households.
At the same time, the country faces a growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer, putting additional pressure on the health system.
The latest discussions between Baryomunsi and Mwinga are expected to reinforce collaboration in areas including healthcare delivery, disease prevention, health-system resilience and emergency preparedness.
For Ugandans, the success of such partnerships will ultimately be measured by improved health services, better-equipped facilities and greater access to quality care.
