A joint security operation involving the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and other state security agencies on Saturday raided the Kampala residence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among as investigations into alleged illicit enrichment and corruption-related offenses intensify.

The operation took place at Among’s residence in Nakasero, an upscale suburb near Fairway Hotel in central Kampala.

Witnesses reported a heavy security presence around the property as armed personnel and investigators entered the premises during the operation. Authorities have not yet publicly detailed what items, documents, or evidence may have been recovered during the raid.

Security agencies also had not issued an official statement by the time of publication explaining the exact scope of the investigation or whether any arrests had been made.

However, reports indicate investigators are examining allegations linked to illicit enrichment and other corruption-related claims involving the former Speaker.

Anita Among served as Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament and remains one of the country’s most prominent political figures within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

She has faced growing scrutiny in recent years over allegations relating to corruption, unexplained wealth, and abuse of office. Among has previously denied wrongdoing in connection with those accusations.

In 2024, both the United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on Among, including travel restrictions and asset freezes, citing alleged involvement in corruption. Ugandan authorities did not file domestic criminal charges against her following the sanctions announcement.

The latest raid comes just days after Uganda’s Inspectorate of Government (IGG) confirmed it was processing a petition filed by lawyers and activists accusing Among of violating the Leadership Code Act.

The petition alleges that she failed to fully declare her income, assets, and liabilities as required under Ugandan law. The complainants requested access to her wealth declaration records and called for formal investigations into possible under-declaration of assets.

Inspector General of Government Lady Justice Naluzze Aisha Batala recently confirmed receipt of the complaint, stating that the matter was under review.

Public debate surrounding Among’s wealth intensified following reports linking her to a Rolls-Royce vehicle reportedly valued at approximately UGX 3.4 billion.

The controversy added to earlier political pressure stemming from the 2023 Karamoja iron sheets scandal, in which government officials were accused of diverting iron sheets intended for vulnerable communities in northeastern Uganda.

Although Among denied involvement in wrongdoing, the scandals fueled criticism from opposition leaders, civil society organizations, and anti-corruption activists.

The raid marks one of the most significant visible law enforcement actions involving a senior Ugandan political figure in recent years.

Political analysts say the development comes at a sensitive moment as Uganda prepares for leadership transitions within Parliament and broader political realignments ahead of future electoral contests.

The operation also signals growing pressure on anti-corruption agencies to demonstrate accountability amid rising public concern over corruption and wealth accumulation among top officials.

Authorities are expected to continue reviewing financial records, asset declarations, and other evidence linked to the investigation.

Neither the Uganda Police Force nor the UPDF has publicly confirmed whether criminal charges are imminent.

As of publication, Anita Among had not issued a public statement regarding the raid on her residence.
