Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago has been brought before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, ending hours of uncertainty over his whereabouts following his reported abduction by security operatives earlier this week.

The development came after family members, lawyers, supporters, and political allies spent much of the day seeking access to Lukwago at Kira Division Police Headquarters, where he had reportedly been held.

According to our reporter, Lukwago was presented before the court in Makindye Division, although authorities had not immediately disclosed the charges he faces or details of the case against him.

His appearance follows days of concern after reports emerged that he had been taken from his home in Wakaliga by armed men, sparking demands from opposition groups and civil society organisations for information about his whereabouts.

Earlier in the day, PFF Deputy Treasurer Francis Mwijukye said supporters who had gathered at Kira Police Station were blocked from seeing Lukwago despite being informed that visitors would be allowed access.

Speaking to our report, Mwijukye said the group was later instructed to stay away from the police premises.

According to party officials, only Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, and his wife were granted access to him.

At Kira Division Police Headquarters, Lukwago’s relatives, led by his wife Nnaalongo Zawedde Lukwago, son Fahad Lukwago, and close friends, waited outside the facility as developments unfolded.

Former Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura confirmed earlier that the statement-recording process was underway before Lukwago was later transferred to court.

Lukwago’s detention has attracted widespread attention because of his role as a leading opposition politician and member of the legal team representing Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale in ongoing treason-related proceedings.

His reported detention had triggered concerns from political parties, lawyers, and human rights groups, who questioned the circumstances under which he was taken and called for adherence to due process.
