KAMPALA, Uganda
Lawyers representing four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye and co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale have arrived at Luzira Prison to review prosecution evidence in their ongoing treason case.
The defence team, led by Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, was seen carrying electronic equipment, including laptops, projectors, and other audio-visual devices, which they said will be used to examine material submitted by the prosecution.
According to the legal team, the equipment is intended to help them carefully assess audio and video recordings that form part of the state’s evidence against the two accused.
The review is part of pre-trial preparations as the defence prepares its response to the prosecution’s case.
The lawyers were granted access to Luzira Prison, where the accused are currently held, to go through the material in a controlled setting.
The involvement of Martha Karua, a senior Kenyan lawyer and former presidential candidate, alongside Erias Lukwago, has drawn increased attention to the case, which has become one of Uganda’s most closely watched political trials.
The defence team says it is committed to ensuring that all evidence is properly examined before the trial proceeds.
Dr. Kizza Besigye, a long-time opposition figure and four-time presidential candidate, and Hajji Obeid Lutale are facing treason charges in a case that has sparked political and legal debate across the country.
The prosecution is expected to rely heavily on audio and video materials as part of its evidence during the trial.
The current review of evidence is part of the defence’s preparation strategy ahead of the continuation of proceedings.
Legal teams are expected to analyse the authenticity, context, and admissibility of the digital material as they build their case.
