Police in Kampala have intercepted an armed robbery attempt in Nakawa Division and neutralized one suspect during a swift response operation carried out by patrol officers.

According to a statement from the Uganda Police Force, the incident occurred in the early hours of June 23, 2026, at around 12:50 a.m. in Ssemwogerere Zone along Mukasa Road.

Police spokesperson SSP Kawala Rachael said a businessman and his wife were walking home when they were ambushed by three-armed men.

The suspects reportedly ordered the couple to stop and lie down before robbing the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint.

The attackers then turned their attention to the woman, demanding her phone.

However, before the robbery could continue, police motorcycle patrol units arrived at the scene, interrupting the attack.

Upon seeing the officers, the suspects attempted to flee. In the process, they abandoned a bag containing suspected stolen items and a firearm.

Police officers immediately pursued the fleeing suspects. During the operation, one of the suspects an unidentified male believed to be about 25 years old was shot and put out of action, according to police.

The other suspects managed to escape, and a manhunt has since been launched to track them down and recover additional evidence.

Police say the recovered items, including the firearm and suspected stolen property, have been secured as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.

The Uganda Police Force praised the patrol team for its quick response, saying such operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb armed robberies in Kampala and surrounding areas.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to security agencies, especially during late-night hours when such incidents are more likely to occur.
