Opposition politician and former Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has criticized Uganda’s justice system and security agencies ahead of a scheduled court ruling on the bail application of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, accusing the government of exerting undue influence over judicial processes.

In a statement posted on social media, Ssemujju said Lukwago is expected to return to Makindye Magistrate’s Court on Today to receive a ruling on his bail application.

The opposition legislator expressed his doubt about the independence of court decisions in politically sensitive cases, alleging that key decisions are determined outside the courtroom.

“As you all know, courts have been turned into processing centres,” Ssemujju wrote, claiming that decisions are made by President Yoweri Museveni, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, or their associates.

Ssemujju also referenced the circumstances surrounding Lukwago’s arrest, describing what he said was a traumatic security operation in which armed personnel allegedly entered the opposition politician’s residence and arrested him.

He said the incident continues to trouble him, particularly because of its impact on Lukwago’s family.

The comments come amid growing concern among opposition leaders over the treatment of political figures facing legal proceedings. Government officials and security agencies have consistently denied accusations of political persecution, maintaining that arrests and prosecutions are conducted in accordance with the law.

Lukwago, one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures and a longtime critic of the government, has faced multiple legal and political battles throughout his career.

His latest court case has attracted significant public attention, with supporters arguing that his rights should be protected and critics insisting that legal processes should be allowed to proceed without political interference.

The outcome of today’s bail ruling is expected to be closely watched by both government supporters and opposition activists, as it could influence broader discussions about the rule of law, judicial independence, and political freedoms in Uganda.
