MITYANA, Uganda
Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama has issued a fresh ultimatum to Serbian construction company EnergoProjekt, directing it to complete the long-delayed Mityana–Mubende Road by March 2027 or risk losing the contract.
The warning was delivered during a site inspection of the road project, where the minister expressed concern over delays and the pace of work.
Byamukama said the government would no longer tolerate prolonged delays on major infrastructure projects, emphasizing that contractors must deliver work within agreed timelines.
The minister warned that if significant progress is not made, the government could terminate the contract and consider alternative options to complete the road.
The Mityana–Mubende Road is a key transport corridor linking central Uganda to the western region and serves thousands of motorists, traders, and businesses.
The project has faced criticism from road users and local leaders over delays that have affected transport, trade, and movement along the route.
Residents and motorists have repeatedly raised concerns about the condition of sections of the road, particularly during rainy seasons when travel becomes more difficult.
During the inspection, Byamukama also pledged to fight corruption in the engineering and contracting sector, saying graft has contributed to poor-quality work and delayed completion of government projects.
He noted that corruption within procurement, supervision, and project implementation processes continues to undermine value for money in public infrastructure investments.
The minister said government would strengthen oversight to ensure contractors meet required standards and deliver projects on time.
Mityana–Mubende Road forms part of Uganda’s national road network and is considered vital for trade, tourism, agriculture, and regional connectivity.
