Serbia’s parliament descended into chaos as opposition lawmakers set off smoke grenades and tear gas inside the legislative chamber in a dramatic act of defiance against the government.

The incident which occurred during a heated session in Belgrade saw lawmakers choking on fumes, security scrambling to restore order and tensions boiling over as protesters inside and outside the parliament accused the ruling party of dictatorship.

The opposition’s move an unprecedented display of resistance comes amid growing political unrest over alleged electoral fraud and government corruption.

The protest inside the Serbian National Assembly was not an impulsive outburst but a calculated statement.

Serbia’s political crisis began after the canopy of a railway station in the city of Novi Sad collapsed in November, killing 15 people.

The tragedy became a flashpoint for latent discontent that had been brewing over Vucic’s 12 years in power.

What began as vigils for the dead have led to four months of near-daily protests that have drawn in large swaths of Serbian society and reached every corner of the Balkan nation.

The opposition led by anti-government lawmakers resorted to extreme measures to disrupt proceedings accusing President Aleksandar Vučić’s ruling party of rigging elections and silencing protests.

With a thick cloud of smoke filling the chamber, the session was abruptly halted and lawmakers were seen coughing, covering their faces and rushing for exits.

Security forces quickly moved in to secure the building while angry government MPs accused the opposition of undermining democracy.

Protesters argue that Vučić’s administration has tightened its grip on power suppressing free speech, manipulating the judiciary and using state institutions to crush protests.

Opposition parties claim that they had exhausted all legal avenues to challenge the election results but their voices were continuously ignored or dismissed.

As frustration peaked, they resorted to a radical attention-grabbing protest to force international scrutiny on Serbia’s political landscape.

“This is not just about elections. This is about democracy itself being under siege. The people of Serbia deserve fair representation not a dictatorship in disguise.”

The government’s response was swift and furious. Pro-Vučić lawmakers condemned the opposition’s tactics branding them extremists and anarchists who disrespected democracy.

Some called for immediate arrests arguing that such violent disruptions should be met with legal consequences.

The ruling party insists that the elections were free and fair dismissing allegations of fraud as baseless conspiracy theories.

President Vučić known for his hardline stance against protests has so far remained silent but many expect a forceful arrest of opposition figures in the coming days.

Serbia’s political turmoil extends beyond its borders as tensions rise in the Balkans over issues of governance, corruption and EU integration. The dramatic scenes in parliament raise questions about Serbia’s future particularly as it seeks closer ties with both the European Union and BRICS nations.
