Robbery Suspects in NRM T-Shirts Face Court

Kampala, Uganda – A group of suspects allegedly involved in a shocking string of daylight robberies on Saturday, June 28, have today been arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at the Law Development Centre (LDC) in Makerere, following public outcry over viral videos showing civilians being attacked and robbed in full view of cameras.

Wandegeya Police arrested the suspects after multiple video clips surfaced online, showing mobs, some dressed in NRM-branded yellow T-shirts, aggressively snatching bags, phones, and wallets from helpless pedestrians as President Yoweri Museveni made his way to the NRM Secretariat for his official nomination as the party’s National Chairperson and 2026 presidential flag bearer.

As Ugandans tuned in to watch what should have been a symbolic day in the ruling party’s calendar, they were instead bombarded with disturbing footage that painted a stark picture: masked or half-visible young men, wearing NRM t-shirts, boldly terrorising passersby along the Kampala streets.

One video showed a man being wrestled to the ground as others pried his belongings from him.

Another clip captured a group surrounding a boda boda rider and forcefully pulling items from his pockets while police personnel looked on.

“This is not politics; this is criminality parading as political support,” one shocked social media user posted.

According to police sources at Wandegeya Station, the arrests were effected late Sunday and Monday morning following extensive community tip-offs and digital evidence shared by the public.

“We want to thank Ugandans for helping us identify some of these individuals. The suspects were found with stolen phones, cash, and other property.”

Police have yet to confirm whether the suspects were officially affiliated with the ruling party or simply took advantage of the NRM event to commit crimes under the cover of political mobilization.

In response to the scandal, the NRM Secretariat issued a statement dissociating itself from the violence, calling for swift investigations and punishment of the culprits. Party spokespersons emphasized that any criminal elements donning party colours do not represent NRM values.

“We condemn the acts committed by individuals masquerading as NRM supporters,” read a statement posted to NRM’s official social media. “Violence and criminality have no place in our party.”

This comes at a sensitive time as the ruling party ramps up political activity ahead of the 2026 General Election and as President Museveni seeks to extend his grip on power beyond four decades.

At LDC Court today, the suspects, some visibly bruised, were read charges related to robbery, assault, and disturbing public order. The presiding magistrate adjourned the matter for further investigations while denying them bail, citing the gravity of the crimes and risk of flight.

The incidents have since triggered widespread debate across the country, with citizens demanding accountability from security agencies for failing to prevent the violence, clarification from the NRM leadership on whether the suspects had any official ties and assurance from the government that such chaos will not happen in future political events.
