KAMPALA, Uganda
The court has adjourned the case involving the murder of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo to July 23, 2026, after the prosecution said investigations are still ongoing.
During court proceedings, state prosecutors informed the court that several suspects had already been arrested in connection with the killing. However, they said forensic examinations showed that some of those arrested did not match evidence collected during the investigation.
The prosecution asked for more time to complete investigations and identify all those responsible for Gongodyo’s death.
The case stems from the mob killing of Sydney Gongodyo, a national rugby player whose death sparked public outrage and renewed calls for action against mob justice.
Speaking to journalists after the hearing, Isaac Kapalaga Kimeze, a lawyer representing the Rugby Union in the matter, said efforts to bring all those involved to justice are continuing.
Kimeze said the Rugby Union is working closely with police investigators to support the ongoing probe and help identify additional suspects linked to the attack.
“We are working with the police to facilitate further arrests and ensure that everyone responsible is held accountable,” he told the media.
The adjournment means that suspects currently before the court will remain subject to ongoing investigations as detectives continue gathering evidence.
The death of Gongodyo has drawn widespread attention from the sporting community, human rights advocates, and members of the public, many of whom have called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those involved.
Police have previously indicated that they are relying on forensic evidence, witness statements, and video footage as part of their investigations.
The case is expected to return to court on July 23, when prosecutors are expected to provide an update on the progress of investigations and any additional arrests made.
