Three Suspects Arrested Over the Attack on Rugby Star Sydney Gongodyo

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the death of Ugandan rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, whose fatal assault by a mob in Kampala has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against mob justice.

According to police, Gongodyo, 27, was attacked by members of the public on June 5 after being accused of snatching a woman’s handbag in the Upper Naguru area of Kampala. Officers responded to reports of the incident and found him critically injured but still alive.

Speaking on the matter, Uganda Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector General of Police Rusoke Kituuma said officers acted immediately after receiving information about the attack.

“As police, we responded to information as soon as we received it regarding the mob action. Upon arrival at the scene, Sydney was found critically injured but still alive,” said Rusoke

“He was rushed to Mulago Hospital for medical attention, where he succumbed to his injuries,” Rusoke added.

Police said Gongodyo died later that evening at Mulago National Referral Hospital despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.

Investigators have since arrested three suspects in connection with the killing. The suspects are currently being held at Kira Road Police Station and are assisting with ongoing investigations.

In a statement, police said preliminary findings indicate that Gongodyo was subjected to mob violence after members of the public accused him of stealing a handbag.

However, authorities emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that detectives are still working to establish the full sequence of events that led to the attack.

Gongodyo was a respected member of Uganda’s rugby fraternity, having represented both the Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates. His death has sent shockwaves through the sporting community, with teammates, fans, and sports administrators describing the incident as a tragic loss.

The 27-year-old was also a student at Makerere University and had recently participated in regional rugby competitions.

His death prompted the postponement of a Uganda Rugby Premiership semi-final fixture as players and officials mourned his passing.

The incident has reignited concerns about mob justice in Uganda, where suspects are sometimes attacked by crowds before investigations can establish the facts.

Police have strongly condemned the killing and urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to law enforcement authorities instead of taking matters into their own hands.

“Mob action undermines the rule of law and can result in the loss of innocent lives,” police said while appealing for calm as investigations continue.

Authorities are reviewing evidence and witness accounts as they seek to determine exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the attack.

The case has attracted widespread public attention, with many Ugandans calling for justice for Gongodyo and demanding accountability for those involved in the mob assault.

As investigations continue, police have urged anyone with information that could assist the inquiry to come forward.
