Former Ethics and Integrity Minister Miria Matembe is expected to appear before the Luzira Magistrate’s Grade One Court today for the hearing of her bail application in a case where she is charged with promoting sectarianism.
Matembe was remanded to Luzira Prison after being formally charged with allegedly making statements likely to promote hostility, hatred or ill will against members of the Banyankole ethnic group.
Her bail application comes a day after she appealed to the court to allow her to seek medical treatment, saying she was unwell and required a medical scan.
The 73-year-old former minister told the court that she was not seeking to evade justice but wanted access to healthcare, urging the court to consider her condition.
Supporters gathered at the Luzira Magistrate’s Grade One Court ahead of the hearing as proceedings got underway.
The prosecution is expected to respond to the bail application before the court determines whether Matembe should be released pending the hearing of her case.
Matembe, a former cabinet minister and governance advocate, has in recent years been an outspoken critic of the government on issues relating to accountability, constitutionalism and the rule of law.
The court is expected to deliver its decision after hearing submissions from both the defence and the prosecution.
