KAMPALA, Uganda
National Unity Platform (NUP) has expressed frustration following the adjournment of a court session involving some of its members and supporters, citing the absence of the presiding magistrate who was reportedly on vacation.
In a statement posted on its official social media platforms, the opposition party questioned the delay, arguing that it prolongs the suffering of individuals it describes as political prisoners.
“Court adjourned. Reason? The presiding magistrate is on vacation! Imagine the pain our comrades have to wade through even when they are not guilty of anything. The would-be temple of justice has turned out to be an enabler of persecution! We shall overcome someday!” the party stated.
NUP officials said repeated adjournments and delays in court proceedings continue to affect accused persons, many of whom remain in custody as they await the conclusion of their cases.
Eddy Mutwe, A. Kivumbi, Bobi Giant, Doreen Kaija, Olivia Lutaya, and others were supposed to be in court today however, the case was adjourned since the magistrate is on vacation.
The party maintains that several of its supporters have faced prolonged legal battles, which it says have disrupted their lives and those of their families.
The latest remarks revive the ongoing debate between the opposition and government over individuals detained on various charges linked to political activities.
NUP and other opposition groups have consistently referred to some detainees as political prisoners, arguing that they are being targeted because of their political beliefs and affiliations.
Government officials, however, have previously maintained that all suspects are processed through the legal system and face charges based on evidence gathered by investigative agencies.
Legal analysts have often noted that court backlogs, staffing challenges, and administrative constraints contribute to delays in Uganda’s justice system.
Human rights groups have repeatedly called for faster disposal of cases, especially those involving suspects held on remand, to ensure the constitutional right to a fair and timely hearing is upheld.
