Police Canine Unit Helps In The Arrest Of Murder Suspect in Kween District

Kween, Uganda

Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of a murder suspect in Kween District following a canine-assisted operation conducted by officers in the Sipi policing region.

According to a police statement, the suspect was tracked and arrested after a coordinated search operation in Kayabai Village, Aloman Parish, Kaptum Sub-county.

Police identified the suspect as Chewanjeli Paul, a resident of Chesakat Village in Tabagon Parish, Binyinyi Sub-county, also in Kween District.

Authorities say he is being held in custody in connection with the alleged murder of Bushendish Micheal, 65, a resident of Katan Village, Aloman Parish, Kaptum Sub-county.

Police reported that officers launched a search operation after the reported killing of the 65-year-old man.

A police canine unit was deployed during the operation, which helped officers track the suspect’s movements across villages in the area before his eventual arrest.

Police described the operation as successful one, noting that the sniffer dog played a key role in locating and apprehending the suspect.

Kween is part of Uganda’s Sebei sub-region in eastern Uganda.

Uganda Police Force frequently highlights the use of its Canine Unit in criminal investigations, particularly in tracking suspects in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Kween District, like other mountainous regions in eastern Uganda, often presents logistical challenges for law enforcement, making tracking operations more complex.

Police said the arrest was achieved through an intelligence-led operation supported by a trained police dog, which followed scent trails linked to the suspect.

The suspect was later located and taken into custody without further incident, according to the police statement.

Police says the suspect will remain in custody as investigations continue, and is expected to be processed for court on charges of murder.

Police says the arrest demonstrates the growing role of specialized units, including canine teams, in supporting homicide investigations and improving response to serious crime in rural districts.
