Uganda sends condolences to Qatar following death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

KAMPALA, Uganda – The Government of Uganda has expressed condolences to the State of Qatar following the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, with a senior Ugandan official signing the Book of Condolences at the Qatari Embassy in Kampala.

Minister of State Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Regional Co-operation), Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, visited the Embassy of Qatar on this morning to convey Uganda’s sympathies on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni, the government and the people of Uganda.

During his visit, Kasolo signed the official Book of Condolences and extended Uganda’s deepest sympathies to the Qatari government, the Royal Family and citizens of Qatar during the period of national mourning.

In his message, the minister described Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader and statesman whose leadership played a significant role in shaping Qatar’s development and international influence.

“His Highness will be remembered for his visionary leadership, distinguished statesmanship, and immense contribution to Qatar’s remarkable development and global standing,” Kasolo said.

He also wished strength and comfort to the people of Qatar as they mourned the former leader.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, after taking over leadership from his father, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani.

During his reign, Qatar experienced rapid economic transformation driven largely by its natural gas resources. His leadership period saw major investments in infrastructure, education, media, diplomacy and international partnerships.

He also oversaw the establishment of several institutions that contributed to Qatar’s growing global profile.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a peaceful transfer of leadership.

Uganda and Qatar have maintained diplomatic relations focused on areas including trade, investment, labour, aviation and economic cooperation.

Qatar has become an important partner for Uganda, particularly in investment and employment opportunities, with cooperation extending to various sectors.

Uganda’s message of condolence reflects the diplomatic ties between the two countries and the recognition of Sheikh Hamad’s influence in Qatar’s modern history.

Uganda joins several countries around the world in mourning Sheikh Hamad’s passing and honouring his contribution to Qatar’s development.

The Qatari Embassy in Kampala is expected to continue receiving messages of sympathy from government officials, diplomatic representatives and members of the public during the mourning period.
