Gen. Moses Ali Nominated for Adjumani West at the Age of 85

Adjumani, Uganda – Veteran politician and senior military officer Gen. Moses Ali has been officially nominated to contest for Adjumani West Constituency without ever stepping out of his car.

The nomination, which took place today, was carried out by Electoral Commission officials in a drive-through style that’s now gone viral.

The 85-year-old general, who has been a towering figure in Uganda’s politics for decades, waved at a small crowd gathered nearby as his papers were officially accepted.

Sources at the NRM Electoral Commission confirmed that Gen. Ali’s nomination met all legal requirements and was conducted in accordance with procedures that allow for accessibility accommodations.

“The documents were verified and signed without incident. He is now a duly nominated candidate.”

Gen. Moses Ali, one of Uganda’s longest-serving politicians and former Deputy Prime Minister, is no stranger to high-stakes elections. His return to the ballot has reignited political conversations in West Nile, where younger challengers were hoping for a generational shift.

Despite his age and reduced public appearances, his popularity in Adjumani remains deeply rooted. To his supporters, he is a trusted elder and a wartime hero who helped shape post-Amin Uganda.

“I would vote for him any day,” said resident Justine Ocen. “He knows this place. He knows our needs.”

While the nomination-from-a-car moment sparked jokes online with one user tweeting,

“When the mountain won’t move, take the ballot to the mountain.”

“This wasn’t just about comfort or age,” said political commentator Sarah Ayikoru. “It’s a quiet power play. Gen. Ali is saying: ‘I’m still here. And I don’t even need to leave my car to win.”

Some users praised the EC for accommodating the elderly and upholding inclusivity, while others questioned whether this sets a fair precedent for all candidates.

“If Gen. Ali can be nominated from his car, can a boda guy be nominated from his stage?” one commenter asked.

With his nomination secured, Gen. Moses Ali is officially back in the race. The big question now is whether his legacy and loyal following will be enough to fend off younger, tech-savvy opponents who are aggressively campaigning across Adjumani.
