Muwanga Kivumbi Appears at International Crimes Division for Bail Hearing in Terrorism Case

KAMPALA, Uganda

Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi has appeared before the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Wandegeya ahead of the hearing of his bail application in an ongoing terrorism case linked to incidents that followed Uganda’s January 2026 general elections.

Kivumbi arrived at the court premises this morning as supporters, legal representatives, and political observers closely followed proceedings in one of the country’s closely watched post-election cases.

Muwanga Kivumbi, a deputy leader of Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), is accused of organising attacks on a police station and a vote-tallying centre after their electoral loss, which the party denies.

Investigations indicated that seven people were killed in the incident however, Kivumbi said that 10 people were killed at his home as they waited for parliamentary election results.

The hearing at the International Crimes Division is centered on Kivumbi’s bail application as he seeks temporary release while legal proceedings continue.

Under Uganda’s criminal justice system, courts consider several factors when determining bail applications, including the seriousness of charges, the likelihood of interference with investigations, and whether an accused person has fixed places of residence and reliable sureties.

Court proceedings had not concluded by publication time.

The matter is being heard at the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Wandegeya, Kampala, a specialized court division that handles serious offenses including terrorism-related cases, war crimes, and transnational crimes.

The division has increasingly handled politically sensitive and high-profile cases in recent years.

Kivumbi’s appearance in court has drawn public attention due to his profile in Uganda’s opposition politics and the broader political tensions that followed the 2026 general elections.

Supporters and political allies have continued monitoring developments surrounding the case, while legal analysts say the bail ruling could shape the next phase of proceedings.

The court is expected to hear submissions from both the defense and prosecution before determining whether Kivumbi qualifies for bail.

As proceedings continue, the terrorism charges remain allegations before court and have not been proven.
