KAMPALA, Uganda
Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) president Erias Lukwago appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye amid heightened security as the court prepared to rule on his bail application in a case where he is charged with misprision of treason.
Lukwago’s appearance attracted supporters, political allies, lawyers, and members of the public, reflecting the growing attention surrounding a case that has become one of Uganda’s most closely watched political and legal developments.
The court session was scheduled for the mention of the case and consideration of his bail application, which his lawyers argue is necessary to allow him to prepare his defence while out of custody.
Lukwago, a senior opposition politician and lawyer, has recently been at the center of national attention following reports of his detention by security operatives. His legal team and political allies have repeatedly questioned the circumstances surrounding his arrest and subsequent detention.
The charges against him relate to misprision of treason, a legal offence that generally concerns the concealment of knowledge about alleged treasonous activities without reporting them to authorities.
Lukwago has not publicly admitted to any wrongdoing and remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in court.
The case has drawn significant interest from opposition parties, civil society organizations, and legal observers due to Lukwago’s prominence in Uganda’s political landscape.
As president of the People’s Front for Freedom and a member of the legal team representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye in separate proceedings, Lukwago has remained a vocal critic of government policies and actions.
