High Court Sets July 3 Bail Hearing for Besigye and Lutale

High Court has scheduled the hearing of a bail application filed by opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale, for July 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., following their appearance before Justice Emmanuel Baguma.

The two appeared before the judge for proceedings relating to an application challenging actions attributed to Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as well as issues surrounding the commencement of their treason trial.

The court deferred consideration of their bail application to July 3.

Meanwhile, Dr. Besigye has filed a fresh civil suit against Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The suit reportedly challenges the deportation of Kenyan lawyer Martha Karua and the arrest of Besigye’s lead counsel, Erias Lukwago, during earlier court proceedings connected to his case.

The latest application adds to a series of legal challenges arising from Besigye’s arrest, detention and prosecution, which have attracted widespread public and political attention.

In a new development, 12 law firms has joined forces to represent Dr. Besigye in the ongoing legal proceedings.

The expanded legal team is expected to strengthen Besigye’s defence as he faces treason-related charges while simultaneously pursuing constitutional and human rights applications before the courts.

Besigye and Lutale remain in custody as their legal team continues to pursue bail and other court remedies. Their case has become one of the country’s most closely watched legal and political matters, drawing interest from opposition leaders, human rights advocates and the wider public.
