Deputy Inspector General Maj Gen Tumusiime Katsigazi has taken over Police after Inspector General of Police Okoth Ochola handed in his handover report following expiry of his contract March 4, 2024, at the Uganda Police Headquarters, Naguru.
While addressing the press, police spokesperson ACP Fred Enanga confirmed the development.
“We wish to inform the public that the outgoing IGP handed over the office to the Deputy Inspector of Police Major General Tumusiime Katsigazi who is the receiving officer pending the appointment of the inspector general of police,” he said before adding.
“We want to inform the public that emeritus IGP John Martins Okoth Ochola has today handed over office following the expiry of his term.”
IGP Ochola was appointed to the role in March 2018, taking over from Gen Kale Kayihura.
Ochola’s term in office would be renewed by President Yoweri Museveni in 2021 extending his contract from March 4, three years ago.
In his tenure as the IGP, Ochola policed the 2021 General Elections, increased police recruitment boosting numbers up to over 45,000 personnel, among other achievements.
He is a career police officer who has served at senior levels for over 30 years. Born in 1958 in Agumiti village, Tororo District, Ochola attended various educational institutions including Abweli Primary School, Rock View Primary School, Kisoko Boys Primary School, and Namilyango College. He later pursued higher education at Makerere University, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1983, followed by a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from the Law Development Centre in the subsequent year.
