US denies Opendi visa to New York conference

Tororo District Member of Parliament Sarah Achieng Opendi has been denied a visa to the United States of America over anti-gay comments.

Opendi was due to attend the 68th session of Commission on the status of Women, a top conference slated for next week in New York.

According to the Guardian, Opendi expressed shock over the denial to travel to US arguing that other MPs who voted in favour of the anti-gay law were given visas while she was sidelined.

Opendi was on record for calling for castration of homosexuals during parliamentary sessions while debating the anti-gay law that signed into law.

“99% of MPs voted in favour of the bill and I’m aware of a number of MP s that have gotten visas to US yet they also supported the bill,” she cried out to the Guardian.

The anti-gay law criminalizes same sex acts with life imprisonment and prescribes up to 20 years jail term for alleged recruitment, promotion and funding of same sex activities.

Opendi joins the Speaker Anita Among who was denied visa to UK and US recently.

The anti-gay law has been challenged in the constitutional court by civil society awaiting ruling.
