Uganda opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye was secretly brought before Nakawa Court today without prior notice sparking outrage from his legal team and supporters after his absences at Buganda Road Court yesterday.
The revelation exposed by outspoken activist Winnie Byanyima his wife has ignited a political firestorm with accusations of judicial manipulation and state-sponsored suppression of protests.
Besigye a long-time opposer of President Museveni’s government now finds himself entangled in yet another legal battle with the circumstances of his court appearance raising more questions than answers.
Renowned politician and four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye was reportedly smuggled into Nakawa Court under a veil of secrecy with neither his lawyers nor his supporters being informed beforehand.
News of the sudden hearing broke when Winnie Byanyima a human rights advocate and the Executive Director of UNAIDS took to X (Twitter) to condemn the move calling it “a shameless act by a rogue regime.”
Byanyima said she and others were rushing to the court to defend him denouncing the government’s tactics as underhanded and oppressive.
Her outrage has been echoed by opposition figures, legal experts, and civil society groups who question the legitimacy of a court session conducted in secrecy.
The Ugandan government has yet to provide an official explanation for the covert court appearance but analysts argue it is part of a broader strategy to limit public mobilization and media coverage.
Over the years, authorities have often resorted to surprise arrests and unannounced court hearings for opposition figures effectively denying them legal representation and public support.
So far, the government has remained tight-lipped about why Besigye’s court session was held in secret. Besigye’s lawyers are expected to challenge the manner in which their client was presented before court citing the violations of fair trial rights.
This is not the first time Dr. Kizza Besigye has been subjected to legal battles. For decades, he has been arrested, detained, and charged multiple times often on politically motivated grounds.
Many see today’s incident as yet another example of the government’s tightening grip on political protests as Uganda inches closer to another election season.
As lawyers rush to challenge the legality of Besigye’s secret court appearance, political tensions continue to rise between the government and opposition.
